How to install PhotoCraft on Linux

PhotoCraft runs natively on Linux, which Photoshop never has. Pick the package that fits your distribution; every option below is official.

Before you start

  • An x86_64 or ARM64 (aarch64) system. A riscv64 tarball exists too, built against Ubuntu 24.04 (glibc 2.39 or newer).
  • Vulkan-capable graphics drivers (Mesa is fine).

Quickest way: the AppImage

  1. Download the AppImage. Download photocraft-0.7.0-linux-x86_64.AppImage (or the aarch64 file on ARM) from the official GitHub release.
  2. Make it executable. Mark the file as executable.
    Shell
    chmod +x photocraft-0.7.0-linux-x86_64.AppImage
  3. Run it. Start it directly. The first run adds a launcher and icon under ~/.local/share; set PHOTOCRAFT_NO_DESKTOP_INTEGRATION=1 to skip that.
    Shell
    ./photocraft-0.7.0-linux-x86_64.AppImage

Other packages

Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint (.deb)

Install with apt so dependencies are resolved:

Shell
sudo apt install ./photocraft-<version>-linux-x86_64.deb

Fedora, RHEL, openSUSE (.rpm)

Install with dnf (or zypper on openSUSE):

Shell
sudo dnf install ./photocraft-<version>-linux-x86_64.rpm

Flatpak (sandboxed)

The bundle needs the freedesktop runtime from Flathub, which flatpak offers to install with it:

Shell
flatpak install --user photocraft-<version>-linux-x86_64.flatpak
flatpak run ai.storyteller.photocraft

Arch, Gentoo and others

Use the AppImage or unpack the tarball anywhere and run the photocraft binary inside it.

Drag and drop doesn't work on Wayland

A known limitation of the windowing library PhotoCraft uses. Use File › Open, or copy the image in your file manager and paste with Ctrl+V. To get drag and drop, run PhotoCraft under XWayland:

Shell
WAYLAND_DISPLAY= photocraft
# or for the Flatpak
flatpak run --nosocket=wayland --socket=x11 ai.storyteller.photocraft

Updating the AppImage

The release ships .zsync files, so AppImageUpdate can download only what changed.

Frequently asked questions

Is PhotoCraft on Flathub or in the Snap Store?

Not at the moment. The Flatpak is a bundle file attached to each GitHub release, not a Flathub listing. There is no Snap.

Does PhotoCraft run on a Raspberry Pi?

There are official aarch64 builds, so a 64-bit OS on a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 with working Vulkan drivers should be able to run it. We haven't tested it, and large documents will be slow.

Where is the CLI after installing the .deb or .rpm?

At /usr/bin/photocraft-cli, already on your PATH.
